LOVE

Happy Valentine's Day!

The internet will be full of bloggers telling the world how much they love their child... significant other... dog...  but since this blog is essentially a giant love letter/stalker's diary to Finley, and I blogged about my husband last year, I thought I would break with tradition and blog about what I LOVE most right now.

Ice.

I really love ice.

It's my only pregnancy craving.  I've been told this is a symptom of Pica, but luckily I don't have any desire to eat metal, batteries or dirt, so don't worry about me too much.  I just love ice--cold, crunchy ice.  I sometimes can't stop thinking about it--I told Sol I really needed some during church Sunday.  He didn't get me any.  Anytime someone leaves school to get something to eat, I request that they bring me back a large cup o' ice.  Mmmmm.

I've been slowly collecting pictures of my favorite types of ice to share with you.  (That's a completely normal thing to do.)  I'm missing my ABSOLUTE favorites, but here's a little rundown of what I love currently.

What I'm looking forward to most about the giving birth in a hospital?  ICE CHIPS.  Least?  Having an IV.  I don't like stuff under my skin.  (Which is why the 8th graders are beginning to drive my crazy...)  But seriously, I've been able to go to the hospital twice in the last month to visit people and got some delicious ice chips both times.  Hospital ice is designed to be eaten--so really it's perfect.  It never hurts your teeth to crunch it because it's airy and delicious.  Five stars.

Chick-fil-a ice is about as close as you can get to hospital ice--plus it's marinated in caffeine free diet coke which adds some extra flava.  Sometimes it tastes a little bit like styrofoam, which is not delicious.  And, free refills.  And fried chicken.  And play place.  Everyone wins!

Not my favorite ice.  It is very similar to Chipotle ice (not pictured) in that it is a little too solid and sometimes hard to crunch.  Still delicious and does the trick, but not my favorite.

While this ice is the most readily available, it is my least favorite.  It has to sit for like, an hour, for the ice to break down enough that I can eat it.  But it's still good.

Absolute favorite?  Z PIZZA!  It's a local pizza chain and their ice is basically shells of ice.  Very thin and delicious.  I think I like it better than hospital ice.  I KNOW.  Dunkin Donuts and Starbucks also have delicious ice and are probably tied for 2nd.

I'm pretty sure Finley doesn't actually like ice, but he's seen me eating it so much lately that he screams, "ICE! ICE!" whenever I have it until I give him a piece... which he spits out.  It's kind of ridiculous.

Happy Valentine's Day.  I hope there is something you love as much as I love ice.  (I still love my family more, but I love ice too.)

  5. Sorry to hurt salt wound but Sonic ice has to be the best-est. Especially with lime wedges and cherry juice floating around in it. But I am a bit intrigued with the Z Pizza ice cup like stuff. That sounds a very close second.

  8. This is hilarious!! I hope I have that kind of craving when I get pregnant--knowing me though it will be something like funnel cakes or some other super high calorie food.

  9. Rachel!
I've been lurking long enough, but what it finally took for me to comment was your mention of zpizza! I worked at their location in Wichita that very tragically closed in 2007, and I think of it fondly probably TOO frequently.
So envious of your proximity to that delightful restaurant, and I appreciate and agree with the majority of your ice analysis.

  10. Thinking of buying a fridge, anyone know if what brand names that makes them like the hospital icechips? Addicted as well (same story as yours)☺

  11. Do you happen to have a circle k nearby??? They have by far the closest thing to hospital ice! And even better...open 24/7!!! I do have 3 Sonic Drive-Ins within 4 miles of my house and 2 Circle K's within 1 mile so I've managed to ask for my bags of Sonic ice to be double bagged so if the melt a little and free fries by the time I get them home, when I drop them on the garage floor I don't get that heartbreaking moment where the bag brakes and half the bag spills out! (A TRUELY TRAGIC SIGHT/FEELING!) SO I just happened to have saved a few of them and when I discovered Circle K's ice - I asked the store manager if I could pay for a bag of ice or a "gallon size fountain soda refill" & just fill up my bags of ice...and to my surprise...he said he loves the ice too & sure! So for about $2.20/bag...I get my amazing ice fix & I've found dead that the morning manager has a stick up her tush about me getting a "whole bag or two" from there and won't sell it to me because they have to pay $300+ to service the machine when it's overloaded like that (I call BS, it's a commercial machine and meant to produce a huge volume of ice but whatever) - so I tend to make my runs late evenings when she's not there and take my big reusable shopping bag and fill 3 bags that'll get me by for the better part of the week! Now I'm EVEN ACTUALLY CONSIDERING shelling out $2-$3k for the ice-o-matic GEMU090 85 LB Pearl Ice Undercounter Ice Machine for home (small volume commercial ice machine which makes the convenience factor ALMOST worth it! (Plus I did thenjoy math, at a minimum of $10/wk on ice...$520+/- per year, 2.3-3 years of ice and never having to be without it...EVER, seems like an okay investment to have at home with a 3 year warranty! And yes, I know it could sound crazy to non-ice eaters but you understand! Dollene, same goes for you but I've also done plenty of calling and research and SUPPOSEDLY GE has one that makes pretty good crushed ice (not pellet, nuggets, sonic ice...but ice bloggers seem to like it)!

I think I'm pretty set on saving up for this little treat but in the meantime, I juse ordered a portable countertop machine on amazon for about $150 that ice eaters seem to have mixed but more fond reviews about than many others and for the price, I suppose it's worth a shot! Will let you guys know how it works out!

Oh and also, Arco am/pm also has crunch ice they'll sell by the bag but theirs is called crunch ice and is a smaller size than the hospital nugget ice...but any kinds of crushed ice is better than none! Coffee Bean also carries pearl ice and yet another location is Cafe Rio! Hope this helps someone!
